currently have deco m5...and purchased a deco x20. do i need to delete the app on my phone and completely start over to install or can i pick up somewhere in the middle and save some of my settings?

No, when you add the X20, the settings on the M5 will be copied to the X20. If you then want the X20 to be your main router, you can swap them: https://community.tp-link.com/us/home/kb/detail/281
