IIRC it's an issue which can't be resolved without TP-Link writing new firmware. In the end I just used a small PC with minimal energy consumption as a media server and left it at that.

As you can see, the drives have changed addresses between reboots. As to investigating what happens if drives are connected directly to the D7 rather than via a hub, as I can't connect three drives...
