I'm only seeing 4 bars when WI-FI connects on my wife's laptop compared with 5 bars I used to see on my old Billion router. I'm on NBN in South Australia and speed test shows 47 download (but that's probably not relevant). How do I find the actual strength of the signal she is receiving (ASUS Intel i7 3700),

Also how do I tell whether she is receiving on the 2.4GHZ or 5GHZ channel and what is the best setup in the router for those wireless channels.

Single bar is not important..Getting 4 bars is good enough.

What router are you using? Model : TD-W8980 is not a dual band router.

OK, it just seems slower than before.

What router are you using? Model : TD-W8980 is not a dual band router.


The Quick Installation Guide says it is "Dual Band" and in the setup screen for wireless both bands are showing.

It is dual band indeed. For 2.4GHz, try channel 1, 6 or 11. For 5GHz, try differnet ones.
Change channel width to 40MHz and secure the network with WPA2-PSK, AES.

Thanks, Ada. Changing the channel width from Auto to 40MHz improved the speed to 72 in Network settings.

Sorry, I've mistaken the number with W8968..;)

Using 40Mhz bandwidth will provide high throughput when there is few other Wi-Fi networks around.
