Model: Adapter
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I have a new deco P9 and set it up and it's connected fine. My speed is 1 gigabit per second but the best speed I get with speedtest on Deco p9 wifi is only around 100 mbps on my second floor third unit.   What am I doing wrong?  Latest firmware has been installed.  Thank you.

Hey

The Deco P9 uses both WiFi and PLC backhaul, usually the PLC is the preferred method

However like most powerlines technology this has limitations on the speed it can transfer and honestly, from experience 100mbps is about that limit.  I have rarely seen powerline connectors transfer much faster than that.  I ran 2000mbps homeplugs for a long time and the speed was around 90-120mbps in real transfer rates, exactly what you are seeing

That aside, being honest with you.. if you have a 1GB connection coming into the home and you wish to provide this as fast as possible to your devices, then you have 2x options

1.  If you have internal cabling (network cables) and can connect the P9s via LAN connection (rather than PLC or WiFi) you will get much faster speeds, likely 400-500mbps or as fast as the WiFi will handle.   Also recommend you switch the P9 to Access Point mode and not router mode if doing this.

2.  Honestly.. if you are running 1gb into the house the AC WiFi5 grade isn't fast enough, you would be looking at the AX WiFi6 devices to get the fastest throughput possible.  However again these should ideally be ran via LAN cable, you simply cant get anywhere near 1gbps over WiFi or PLC.  You may find the WiFi6 wireless backhaul to be faster than the P9 PLC.

I had the same issue, went from 80mbps FTTC to 1GB FTTP and had to run cables to get the speeds, as mentioned my old 2000mbps homeplugs topped out around 120mbps.

There is another option to remember, for house that can't be wired with Ethernet but has TV cables going to different rooms. For that type of a house, MoCA adapters could be a good solution for wired connection to Deco node.

Sometimes, ISP router already has MoCA, which means house owner may only need to add just one MoCA adapter.

@Philbert thanks for the reply.  I have no Ethernet running in my house and was running actiontec extenders with adaptors over my coax before but could not get great speeds.  How do I switch my P9 to Access Point mode and not router mode or to wifi6?  Thank you.

@Alexandre. Do I need the moca adapter on the other side of my coax before it goes into the extender?

Hey

The link below will tell you how to switch to access point mode, but I would only recommend doing that if you can run some sort of cable between the devices.  It basically disables the WiFi backhaul in favor of a LAN backhaul (LAN Cable)

https://www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/1842/

WiFi6 is a different thing, its the new standard of WiFi speed.

Basically, the P9 you have are WiFi5 devices (also called AC WiFi) and so in real world speeds should get around 350mbps on WiFi connections, and around 100mbps on the PLC.   The official stats are 1200 WiFi and 1000 PLC, you wont ever get that!

WiFi6 devices are the new standard and have better WiFi, not massively quicker but definitely quicker, this is also known as AX WiFi.   The Deco AX300 for example, these devices are more expensive than the P9s, but the WiFi connection between them is generally quicker than the PLC or WiFi on the P9s and therefore should offer better performance overall.    However these are more expensive devices.

Just from experience, if you are running 1gb WAN connections you really need to consider either

1. Running cables with WiFi 5 devices

2. Going for WiFi 6 mesh

As mentioned before I had the same issue when I got the 1Gb WAN and went for option 1, as Alexandre mentioned you could use MoCA adaptors if you have coax running in the rooms?

Long story short, 1gbps is pretty much impossible for anything but a LAN cable (MoCA come close in fairness), outside that you are looking into the AX Deco range and its going to be $$$ and not as fast.  The P9 backhaul using PLC isn't going to be fast enough for you in reality, it was only ever designed for up to 100mbps WAN.

@Richard17 Would you say I am better to stick with the MCOA?  I was not sure if I need the adapter on both ends or not? I have several cable outlets within my home.

If you have several cable outlets then YES that might be the best option for you, it would be much quicker than using the PLC!

In answer to your question, it's likely you would need an adaptor at each port, therefore one for your router/internet and 3x more for the Decos (unless you have one of the Deco straight into/beside the router)

Can’t I have the adapter on the other end straight into my actiontec extender? I will just return the Deco to Amazon.
