Hello - I've just purchased a single Deco 5 (1300) unit thinking I could set it up and place it in the kitchen where at the moment our Virgin Media router just wont reach i.e there is zero wifi there. I thought this single Deco 5 unit could be set up and then placed in the hallway to push the wifi signal into the kitchen. I've tried to set up the deco unit but as soon as you take out the ethernet cable from the back of the Virgin Media unit then it all goes to red light and stops functioning. Have I bought the wrong device???? It seems I need to keep one Deco unit permanenetly connected via ethernet cable and then I can have a second unit positioned eslewhere in the flat that will push the wifi signal to the back of the house? I couldnt see anywhere on the tp-link site which suggested you need to purchase 2 units to achieve this outcome. As you can tell I have zero IT knowledge, so any responses please assume you are dealing with an 8 year old! Many thanks, Steve

@StevePMP

Yes, you've bought the wrong item for what you expected.

What you may need is WiFi range extender. I have link for you, with helpful article from PC Mag, that discusses this topic: https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-wireless-range-extenders

Read this article through, it not only explains what range extenders are and how they work, but suggests good options to choose from.

Also, at the end of this article there is section titled "Wireless Extenders vs. Wi-Fi Mesh Systems." Deco is WiFi mesh system, and that section will be helpful for you to read, too. If you follow link in that section, it'll direct you to PC Mag review of WiFi mesh systems. That review is also helpful, and might convince you to stay with WiFi mesh. If it does, you'll have to buy one more Deco M5. If it does not, return M5 you have and settle on WiFi range extender.
