Model: Deco S4
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.4.3 Build 20200918 Rel. 77820

Hey guys,

Recently purchased the 3 pack deco s4 and so far things have been fine except for one really strange issue which I don't understand.

I have my router in modem mode -> main s4 -> TP-Link TL-SG108S 8 port switch -> ethernet to office room -> TP-Link TL-SG1005D -> one cable to desktop PC, one to Laptop ethernet to usb adaptor

Now the really weird thing is, whenever I shut down the laptop, the ENTIRE internet access in the house is lost, with the Decos turning red and needing a reboot. But unless I disconnect the second switch, even the reboot will not work.

I have narrowed it down to being exclusively the second switch and powering off the laptop as if I connect the laptop directly to the first switch it is fine, but if its the only device connected to the second switch and I power it off then the internet access is lost a few minutes later.

I assumed my setup should be fine and I purposely bought tp-link switches for compatibility reasons but in all honesty if I can't solve this issue I may be forced to return the products and opt for another solution which won't cut out my internet. I have also downloaded the logs from the device if you want me to provide those for debugging the issue.

My money is on "Ethernet to usb adaptor." USB devices do not necessarily getting powered off when laptop is powered off. Perhaps, something weird happens with adaptor when laptop is down but adaptor stays powered, which confused Deco mesh.

To test: power off laptop. Wait till network is down. Unplug Ethernet to USB adaptor from laptop and Ethernet cable from adaptor (just to cover all bases). Wait few more minutes. See if Internet restores without need to disconnect the second switch.

Alternative test: power off laptop. Immediately after, not waiting till network goes down, unplug Ethernet to USB adaptor from laptop and Ethernet cable from adaptor (just to cover all bases). Wait few more minutes to see if everything is still fine with the Internet.

If you find it is an adaptor, there may be workaround. See in device manager configuration settings for adaptor if it supports "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." If unsure, google for that text and you'll find articles describing where this setting is.

The point would be to automatically power off usb adaptor when laptop goes to sleep or powered off.

Alternatively, you could just unplug adaptor from laptop every time before you shut laptop down. Obviously, that should work in any case. Not the most convenient option, but may suffice till you find more convenient ones.

@fatalenigma

Hi,

Thank you very much, Alexandre.

How about you now and have you done the above tests to see whether it is caused by the Ethernet-USB adapter?

(please feel free to send me a private message for notice.)

Thanks a lot.
