Port forwarding - on TP-Link app or on separate router?

Hi guys,

I have a Huawei B315s-22 router connecting to the internet via SIM card, with which my 4G signal provides good speed. I have a number of TP-LINK AC2200 Deco M9 Plus devices, with one of them plugged in via ethernet cable to the Huawei router. All is working well.

In order to improve the performance of an online game I play I need to open some ports. My question is where do I open the ports - on the TP-Link app, on the router, both?

Regards

@Kim1

Depending on how you have set this up is the answer.   You will definitely need to do it on your Router regardless, however, you may also need to do this on the Deco if you have it in router mode.

Quick check if your Deco is in router mode, your devices IPs are likely  192.168.68.x  range provided you didn't change this!

Lets assume you need ports 9998 and 9998 forwarded.

Assuming you have the Deco in router mode then

1.  Log into your router and set the port forwarding for 9998/9999 to the Deco (192.168.68.1).  This will send all data on those ports to the Deco, its generally accepted / easier to use the internal and external ports as the same 9999 to 9999 for example

2. On the Deco app, under advanced > port forwarding set up the Ports to forward again.  This time set the internal IP to whatever device you require the data sent to (PC, Xbox etc)

Basically your router will forward to the Deco.. The Deco to your device.

That should be you

Thanks very much for the quick reply. My Deco's are indeed in the range 192.168.68.* so I will port forward at the router and on the Deco via the App. Does this solution assume my target device (games machine) has a fixed IP address (192.168.68.X)?

@Kim1

No the Deco will just forward to the IP you determine, if that device changes IP it wont work

I would recommend you set that IP as a reservation, easier in the long run :)
